Tips for Supporting Someone with Mental Illness

  • Take time to look after yourself and talk to others who are in similar situations
  • Be a good listener and only give advice when it's wanted
  • It takes time for a person with mental illness to get better. Be patient
  • Remember, it's not their fault that they have a mental illness
  • No matter how small, focus on the progress they make
  • Give them the support they need to take responsibility for the things they can control, which could include taking their medication and attending sessions with a counsellor
  • If you think a person may be suicidal, ask them and listen to what they say without judgement. Help them get the professional support they need
