Offering so many programs to the community puts a heavy work load on us, and so we often must look to members of our community for help. ATCO is well known for their dedications to the community through various volunteer contributions and sponsorships. We feel especially lucky to have been chosen by them as an outlet for this wonderful generosity! Today, in the name of ATCO, we’d like to talk a little bit about the benefits of volunteer work. When it comes to helping people, volunteer work is one of the best routes to take! Signing up is as easy as making a phone call, and the benefits are numerous!

Job Skills

Working as a volunteer through organizations like the CMHA gives you loads of opportunity to learn new skills and time to practice skills that you’ve already learned. The social skills learned as well as the new information that you learn during each volunteer shift can be used in other areas of life and can even be applied to your resume when applying for a new job!

Health Benefits

Among the many perks of volunteer work are health benefits. Volunteering requires a certain amount of physical activity, which as we know is beneficial to one’s overall health. But with volunteering you get a double whammy. Not only does it keep you physically active but giving up your own time in the name of generosity and good will does wonders for the mind! There is a known correlation between positivity and happiness, and there isn’t much you can do that’s more positive than going out and helping those in need! Take it from us—knowing that we can help those around us have a better life gives us a sense of purpose unlike anything else.

It Benefits the Community

This one might sound obvious, but it’s still important enough that we felt the need to include it! Volunteer work helps so many people every day. Without it, the problems that we help people face every day—addiction, depression, anxiety, homelessness, and the countless other problems that stem from mental illness—would continue to worsen. Giving back to the community helps us strengthen our bonds as members of our communities, both locally and globally. It lets people know that there are people out there who care. That hope lives, even though all may feel hopeless.

We’d like to close by once again thanking ATCO Energy for their help. We greatly appreciate all that you’ve done! Its generosity like this that allows us to continue to do what we do best: helping those in need.
